Paintings owned by the Kyoto University Museum originate from the collection of the Division of Japanese History, Faculty of Letters. Major part of the collection is composed of portraits created during the medieval and early-modern periods. The collection also includes paintings of various themes, such as “The Madonna with the Infant Jesus and Her Fifteen Mysteries”, a well-known religious painting worshiped by Christians in hiding under the ban on Christianity in Japan, and other paintings related to Ryukyu or Korea.
