Historical materials owned by the Kyoto University Museum originate from the collection built by the Division of Japanese History, Faculty of Letters. The division had a policy to store classical books in the library of the faculty and ancient manuscripts and records in the Faculty of Letters Exhibition Hall (later reorganized as the University Museum, Faculty of Letters; currently the Kyoto University Museum). However, because collections including both ancient manuscripts and classical books were kept together in the exhibition hall, most of the classical books owned by the Kyoto University Museum today are part of ancient manuscript collections passed down through families of court nobles.
