東インド会社の医療スタッフとして働いていたロイルは, 植物にも強い興味を持ち, 伝統医学に用いられる植物の調査などもおこう一方, 東インド会社がインド北部のサハーランプルに持っていた植物園の園長となり, ヒマラヤ山地やカシミールの初めての本格的な植物や地質の調査をおこなった. この本はその成果をまとめたもので, 植物の図の多くは当時植物学者から極めて高く評価されていたインドの植物画家ヴィシュヌプラサード (Vishnupersaud) が描き, 製版も高名なリトグラファーであるガウチ (M. Gauci) の手になる. (解説: 疋田努, 井上敬 / 協力: 永益英敏, 山極寿一)

John Forbes Royle (1799 - 1858), who was working for the East India Company as assistant surgeon, had a strong interest in plants, and studied medicinal plants used in traditional medicin. He became superintendent of the East India Company's botanic garden at Saharanpur in northern India, and conducted the first surveys on the geology and botany of the Himalayas. This book is the work on which his reputation chiefly rests. Many of the drawings are by Vishnupersaud, who is considered the finest Indian botanical artist of his time, and produced by the famous lithographer Maxim Gauci.
