This is a collection formerly held by a Kyoto City-based businessman, Mr. Takashi Otsuka, of about 470 maps of Kyoto created during the period from the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji era. Akihiro Kinda (1946-), a professor of Kyoto University, did research on these maps, which led to the donation of this collection to Kyoto University. Otsuka systematically collected rare maps, including Miyakonoki (都記) (ca. 1624-1626), which is a map of Kyoto City and the extant oldest published city map in Japan.
